Today in Brock’s 4th Grade Abeka Academy Language class, the assignment was to choose a maxim to explain. Brock chose Benjamin Franklin’s maxim, “God helps those who help themselves.” I thought he did a very good job of discerning the meaning of this commonly quoted phrase. Here is what he wrote:
“God helps those who help themselves.” Do you wonder what that means? Here is a story explaining it:
One day, there was a farmer. He needed to spray insecticide on his crops before the locusts came. “Dear God,” he prayed, “Please help me spray the fields.” His crops were destroyed. Why? He didn’t do it!
So, if you pray for God to help you do something, you have to do it. God won’t do it automatically. If you do it, God will help you.

Pretty wise for his young years!
